Kemp Malone papers, 1910-1970.

The collection consists of the papers of Raiford Kemp Malone from 1910-1970. The papers include notes, an etymology ledger, bibliography cards, articles, biographical information, correspondences, litigation papers, clippings, contracts and receipts, and photographic negatives. Materials reflect Malone's career and interests. Topics include Medieval and early English literature, particularly Beowulf and Chaucer; etymology; associations to which Malone belonged; honors and awards received; poetry; and writings. Copies of correspondence, legal documents, clippings, and pages from reference works relate to his testimony as an expert witness in legal proceedings. There are also two folders of correspondence with editor Thomas A. Kirby concerning a tribute issue of Philologica celebrating the career of Malone.

Raiford Kemp Malone, educator and scholar, was born March 14, 1889, in Minter, Mississippi, and died October 13, 1971, in Eastport, Maine. He was a graduate of Emory College (1907) and became a professor at Johns Hopkins University (1924-1956). A medievalist and world authority on Chaucer, he was also an etymologist and the author of over 500 works.
